Week beginning 4.07.2022

 

This week we have started to look at mini beasts and shared the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar with the children. We talked about the different food he eats and look at sequencing them in the correct order. In Literacy we wrote our own riddles about a mini beast, using descripting language to talk about their unique features. 

In maths we explored symmetry and looked at recreating symmetrical patterns with  a partner. We have also looked at some teen numbers 11- 16

We looked at the artist Matisse and crater our own masterpieces inspired by his art work 'The Snail'. 

In Jigsaw we continued to talk about transitions to year 1 and discussed our feeling now that we know which classes we are in next year. 

Week beginning 20.06.2022 and 27.06.22

 

This week we have looked at the bees and reading 'From Larve to Bee' We talked about the different stages of the bee life cycle and looked and different facts about bees and why they are so important. In Literacy we wrote our own Bee Poster. 

 

In Maths, we have looked at halving, children explored finding a half of a blob of pollen but cutting into into two equal parts. 

Week beginning 13.06.2022

 

This week we have looked at the farm and visited Bucklebury Farm  Before the trip  we talked  about what what they might see at the farm. After the farm visit, we talked about the things that we did and saw. We then used our retelling skills to write a recount about our trip to the farm.

 

In Maths, we have continued to look at number bonds to 10, children explored finding number bonds to 10 using the different animals. (e.g 4 cows and 6 goats).  We then used the mathematical language  ……….add……equals……. to explain our work. 

Week beginning 23.05.2022

 

This week we have looked at the Platinum Jubilee and the Queen. We discuss who the queen is, why she is important and why we are celebrating. We have looked at  some pictures of the Queen (past and present) to compare and shared footage of previous jubilees.  We created our own fact file about the Queen

 

 

In phonics we have looked at the tricky words: today, out.

 

In Maths, we have continued to look at doubling on numbers and thinking about what happens when we had two of the same numbers together. 

Week beginning 16.05.2022

 

This week we have been reading the story of  The Three Little Pigs and discuss what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the book. Children then used their knowledge of the story to retell the story with a change of the martials in which the the houses are made out of.  

 

In phonics we have looked at the tricky words: what, when , one, there

 

In Maths we have looked at doubling by count out a set of sticks and then double that amount by counting out the same amount again. This is something you can practice at home.  Please encourage  your child to use our Maths vocabulary when they explain their work :
Double, halve, predict, count, number names, count out, how many, accurately.

 

We have also looked at the different houses through the years, discussing how things have changed/stayed the same.  When you are out look at the different house you walk past and think about what materials have been used to build houses. Children have enjoyed making make their own three little pigs houses using the different material like :straw, sticks, and paint and sponges to print bricks.

Week beginning 9.05.2022. 

 

This week we have continued to look at The Gingerbread Man story. 

 

In phonics we have looked at the tricky words: were , here , little , says . 

 

In Maths we have continued to explore the concept of sharing objects between groups, looking at buttons between different number of Gingerbread Men.
 

Week beginning 2nd May 2022. 

 

This week we have looked at The Gingerbread Man story. We read the story of the Gingerbread Man story as a class and discussed what happened and what might happen next. 
We then looked at different speech from the story, discussing who is saying which part. We read each one in different voices/expression to encourage the children to do the same during their retelling in the small world using puppets. 

 

In phonics we have looked at the tricky words: come , love, some, do. 

In Maths we have started to introduce the concept of sharing objects between groups, looking at splitting Gingerbread Men into two different trays and how to keep it fair by making sure that  both groups had equal amount of biscuits on them. 
We created a giant Gingerbread Man. Children to worked together to collage a whole class one. 

Week beginning 25.04.2022

This week we have introduced our new topic for this half term : Traditional Tales. 
Children to be read the story of the Three Billy goats Gruff and discussed what is happening, what might happen next.  We then used our knowledge of characters to write our own character description for the troll.
In maths we have been learning to identify and sort odd and even numbers. We talked about how even numbers can be made into pairs whereas the odd numbers always have an odd one left.
We made our own bridges using different material, created our very own story scenes for the Three Billy Goat Gruff story and then used some positional language to positions our own goats in the appropriated place. e.g. on top of, underneath, next to, in front of, behind, inside.   

Week beginning: 4.04.2022

 

Our focus in this week has been the Easter holidays is RE, we have look at the Easter story and  wrote our own recounts of it. 

 

In Maths, the children are learning to compare quantities using number rods, we have been working hard on our mathematical vocabulary including more than, less than and looked at  recording our work. 

 

In our Jigsaw lesson, we have been learning how important it is to wash our hands regularly, especially before we eat or after we have been to the toilet. 

Week beginning: 28.03.2022

 

This week we have all enjoyed going on our first school trip to the Aquarium. We then wrote a recount of the our trip thinking  about what we did first, next and last. 

 

In Maths we looked at selecting two numicon and compare them using the language of more than, less than. 

 

In Jigsaw this week we looked at stranger danger: and knowing what a stranger is and how to stay safe if a stranger approaches us. We then created our own stranger danger safety posters.
 

Week beginning: 21.03.2022

 

This week we are looking at the season of Spring. We have talked in details about things that we might see at spring. We have been using  the new vocabulary during this time and when reading non-fiction books, looking at the tuff tray  and when making our non-fiction Spring books. 

 

In phonics we have been focussing on reading and writing words ending in 'ing' and come compound words like: farmyard, rooftop, carpark, popcorn. 

 

In Maths we have continued to look at comparing groups, we compared groups by quantities, weight and length. Using words : more than, fewer than, longer, shorter, heavier, lighter and the same as. 

Week beginning: 14.03.2022

 

This week we have been focusing on the theme of reduce, reuse and recycle. We have been sharing lots of non-fiction and fiction books on our recycling theme which have given us lots of discussion points.

 

In Phonics we have been looking at word with two digraphs in them.

 

In Maths we have been looking at comparing the quantities of objects and discussing which group has the most and which one has the fewest amount.

 

Our role play has changed to a under the sea cave, which has given lots of opportunities for conversation about different under the sea creature facts.

 

During Jigsaw we have been continuing our theme of keeping health by thinking about what makes a healthy plate of food. The children were then given opportunities to create their own health plate.

 

Outside, the children enjoyed freeing the sea creatures from the ice and working out different ways to save them. In the wet weather, we enjoyed playing float and sink to explore which toys or outside items would float in the water or sink. 
 

WB 7.03.2022

 

This week we have looked at our Under the Sea topic and the human impact on the under water environment. Children have been exposed to images and listen to stories demonstrating how humans have impacted negatively on the ocean and sea life. They were encouraged during whole class discussion to make links to their own experiences and talk about they thinks they have seen like: seeing litter on a beach, making sure they put their rubbish in the bin.

 

We shared photos of sea creatures stuck in a variety of ways, discuss how they are stuck and what they might say if they could talk, we then created our own speech bubbles for the animals in distress.

 

In Maths we have been learning to make shape patterns and looking at changing the orientation of the shapes.

 

We have been looking at make shades of green using different paint colours.

WB 28.02.2022

 

This week we have enjoyed exploring our new topic Under the Sea. 

 

In phonics we recapped the sounds: ai ee igh oa oo ar or ur  ow oi ear. 

 

In maths we looked at making patterns using different 2D shapes. 


We have enjoyed sharing verity of books during our World Book Day celebrations. We looked at the different types of stories including: fiction, non-fiction, poems and audio books. 

WB 7.02.22 and 14.02.22

 

Over the last two weeks we have been looking at every day super heroes “Peopel Who Help Is” . We looked at many non-fiction books about; doctors, firefighters, vets, police officers, postal workers, teachers, builders and other professions to see how they help to look after our world. 

 

In phonics we worked on consolidating  our knowledge of phonemes, digraphs and trigraphs to help us read and write short captions. 

 

In maths we looked at taking away number and how our bond of number bonds to 5 can be used to complete the inverse function.

This week continued to look at Chinese New Year and how people around the world celebrate it. We read the story of the Great Race about the Great Emperor and the 12 different animals after which the years are names.

 

In phonics we looked at using our knowledge of phonemes  to read longer words like; rabbit , carrot, kitten ribbon, bedroom , farmyard. 

 

In maths we looked at ordinal numbers in ration to the order in which the animals completed the race.

Gruffalo story map

 

WB 1.11.21

 

This half term our focus topic is Julia Donaldson, over the course of this half term we will be looking after different books she has created and look at recreating them in our own way. 
 

This week we have been reading the story : The Gruffalo  and we learned the the nursery rhyme: Humpty Dumpty. 

 

In our phonics lessons we have worked hard on consolidating all the phonemes we have learned so far and looked at reading simple words independently by looking at the sounds individually and blending them together. We have also used our phonological knowledge to write simple labels for the different body parts of The Gruffalo.

 

In daily maths lessons we have looking at numbers 4,5 and 6.


We have also enjoyed looking at different types of celebrations talking our Halloween, Diwali and Guy Fawkes Night and how we observe each of these celebrations.

In daily maths lessons we have focused on numbers 1,2,3. We looked at the composition of each number and explored different ways of representing each one. 

 

We have enjoyed reading books about families and children drew a picture of who lives in their house.  We then had a go at labelling each member of our household by writing the sounds we can hear.

We have loved exploring the outdoors during our first Forest School session this Wednesday. The children have looked at different signs of autumn and how the natural world around us changes. 
 

During our phonics lessons this week and have learnt the phonemes for the letters - i,n,m,d.

Your child will have brought home new flashcards with the letters on them, please look on Tapestry for help with sounding out letters and activities to try at home. We have also started to build and blend words by putting 3 letters together to create simple decodable words.

 

In daily maths lessons and have focused on sorting groups of objects in different ways. We looked carefully for the similarities and differences objects had and sorted them into groups based on a rule we had made.  

 

We have still been practising our name writing, please look in your child's school bag for their name card to help them practise at home.

WB 20.09.21

 

We were all looking very smart at the beginning of the week ready for our first school photographs.

 

We started daily phonics lessons this week and have learnt the phonemes for the letters - s,a,t,p

Your child will have brought home flashcards with the letters on them, please look on Tapestry for help with sounding out letters and activities to try at home.

We have used what we have learnt in our phonics lessons to hunt for letters in the environment, match letters to pictures and objects and have practised writing the graphemes.

 

We also started Daily maths lessons and have focused on matching objects. We looked carefully for patterns and colours, have started the explain how we know something is the 'same' of 'different' and introduced the children to the Makaton signs for 'same' and 'different'

 

We have also been practising our name writing, please look in your child's school bag for their name card to help them practise at home.

WB 13.09.21

 

The children have settled in extremely well on their first week in Reception, they have been learning lots of new rules and routines, learnt how to change for PE, have started to demonstrate independence and have been making new friendships.

 

Thank you for making sure children have their PE kits in school and that all clothes are named.
