Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
This week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in maths we will be comparing the weight of items using balance scales and the language of heavier and lighter. We appreciate that this is tricky to do at home without balance scales but please encourage your child to compare the weight of items using their hands and the language: heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest. See also the comparing mass activity sheet below.
We will then be beginning to weigh items using cubes and the balance scales – e.g. how many cubes weigh the same as a pencil. Again this will be hard to do without balance scales but the following website has an interactive game involving comparing weight: https://pbskids.org/peg/games/happy-camel
See below for some reasoning tasks which we will be doing in school on Thursday.
We will not be teaching them grams, kilograms, ounces or pounds at this stage in year 1.
