Welcome to Year 2!

2026-27

In Year 2, our teachers are Mrs McLaren (Class 7), Miss Quick (Class 8) and Miss Walker (Class 9). We are also supported by our dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSAs): Miss Jackman and Mrs Muller.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your child's teacher. If they are not around at pick-up, you can speak to them by phoning the school office and requesting an appointment.

Year 2 Autumn 1 Curriculum Newsletter

Update – Friday 18th September 2026

In geography, the children have been learning about keys and how they help locate places on a map. They played games to practise this skill, then tried locating places themselves.

The children had a special delivery this week, in English! Little Red Riding Hood left each class her true story, Little Red, and has set the children the challenge of rewriting it. To help, they have been learning the story off by heart using actions.  They have worked so hard to learn the whole story and enjoyed performing, recording and then watching themselves on the big screen!

In maths, this week's focus has been place value. The children have practised partitioning numbers into 10s and 1s using practical resources. They then challenged themselves to partition a range of numbers flexibly. They have also been practising counting forwards and backwards in 10s to 100; ask them to show you this at home!

This week in art, the children recapped their understanding of mixing hues, which they learnt last week. They then practised mixing hues by putting small strokes of paint around the outside of a picture. They had to look carefully and decide how much of each colour to mix, in order to make a lighter or darker hue.

Update – Friday 11th September 2026

In geography this week, Year 2 travelled around the world! They stopped off at each of the 7 continents, using their atlas skills to locate countries on each continent. They explored food from different countries, completed atlas challenges and learnt facts about cultures around the world. They then recapped their understanding of compass points from Year 1 and put their learning into practise by making their own! They worked in groups, tested each other's knowledge, and then applied it to UK map work.

In science, the children continued their learning about humans, this time focusing on human life cycles. They discussed the different stages of human life, from birth to old age. They worked hard to create their own human life cycles, making sure each stage and process was in the correct place.

This week in art, Year 2 continued their Colour Quest unit, focusing on colour mixing. This week, they focused on mixing different hues. The children chose 2 base primary colours and explored what happened when they added different amounts of each colour. They discovered they had created a whole range of hues, which looked fantastic!

Update – Friday 4th September 2026

We have had a great first week in Year 2! We have been getting used to our new classrooms, making friends and starting our new Year 2 learning. 

In science, the children started their new unit 'Healthy Humans'. They recapped what humans are and completed a true-or-false quiz to support their understanding. Some of the facts they learnt are that humans are living things, they are omnivores, they have 5 senses and they are mammals. 

In art, Year 2 began their 'Colour Quest' unit by creating their own colour wheels. The children mixed primary and secondary colours, and had to decide where to place these on the colour wheels. The finished results look amazing!

In maths, the children have begun learning about place value up to 100. They are recognising tens and ones, and using dienes to create a range of 2-digit numbers. They have been practising counting in 10s and are becoming increasingly confident. 

Well done for making such an amazing start, Year 2!
