Update - Friday 23rd October 2026

In geography this week, the children applied their understanding of maps to a new challenge! They were challenged to design a map of the classroom with symbols and a key. The children identified which items to include and drew some fantastic maps, complete with clear keys.

This week was an amazing week of English in Year 2! The children used the facts they had learnt to write a biography about the life of Mary Seacole. The teachers were so impressed with how hard the children worked and the improvement in their writing from the start of Year 2. They were also able to thoughtfully explain the link between this piece of writing and Black History Month. Well done Year 2!

This week's computing lesson focused on online safety. The children learnt about personal information and discussed what should and shouldn't be shared online. They explored a range of scenarios involving sharing personal information and decided whether these were correct. They learnt about privacy settings and why these are important for staying safe online.

Update - Friday 16th October 2026

This week, the children have explored addition in our maths lessons. They used a range of concrete resources to help build their understanding of adding 1s, adding across a ten and number bonds to 100. They have enjoyed selecting which resources they would like to use and working independently to solve problems.

In science, the children investigated personal hygiene and why it is important. They discussed different daily routines and they worked in groups to identify why each one is hygienic. Then, they explored germs and how quickly they can spread, using glitter to help. Only 6 people had "germs", yet 5 minutes later, the whole class were covered! This helped the children to see why it is so important to wash our hands with warm water and soap to stop germs from spreading.

This week, the children explored digital maps. They used Digimaps and Google Maps to look at our school, identifying different areas that they could recognise. They tried map view, satellite view and other settings to consolidate their understanding of maps of our local area from over the last few lessons. They learnt how to zoom in and out to help them spot physical and human features of the school grounds.

Update - Friday 9th October 2026

Linking to Black History Month, we began learning about a mystery person in English this week! The children had a box of clues and they had to work out who they might be learning about. The clues were about Florence Nightingale and they enjoyed reading and learning about her. However, the children were shocked to discover that they would actually be learning about Mary Seacole, whose work hadn't been valued at the time because of her race. They linked this to the school-wide celebration of Black History Month and the importance of remembering and sharing stories of Black people. Year 2 are very excited to learn more about Mary Seacole and write their own biography about her life by the end of the unit. They have already begun learning facts about her and they played a game to test their knowledge.

In maths, Year 2 are focusing on addition and subtraction. They have consolidated their knowledge of number bonds to 10 and 20, and are using this to help them solve problems. They have learnt about related facts and making the connection that addition with ones, such as 1+2= 3, can be multiplied by 10 to become 10+20= 30.  They also enjoyed investigating fact families, where they discovered how to calculate the inverse.

In science this week, the children have started an exercise investigation! They were given the question: what effect does exercise have on the human body? Over the next 2 weeks, they will be investigating what happens when an exercise is repeated daily. The children decided they would like to plank every day, timing how long they can hold it for. They have made good predictions about patterns they expect to see, including that the time will increase, their bodies will get stronger and the plank will feel easier over time. When the investigation is complete, they will identify patterns from the data they have collected in order to answer their question. Year 2 are really enjoying exploring science practically and getting stronger every day!

Update – Friday 2nd October 2026

Art

This week the children used their learning from the past 4 weeks to create their final pieces. They were given a template and primary colours, and given the challenge of creating their own piece. They used knowledge of mixing and hues to mix a range of colours and the results were very impressive!

English

This week was the end of the Little Red unit. The children used the sentences and ideas from the last 3 weeks to write their own version of the Little Red story. They wowed their teachers with their creativity, capital letters, full stops and handwriting. Well done Year 2!

Science

In science, the children were challenged to create a life-sized Eatwell plate! They learnt about food groups and some of the foods included in each one. Then they sorted out real food into the different sections and discussed why it is important for us to eat a balanced diet.

Update – Thursday 24th September 2026

This week in computing, the children went on a technology hunt around school. They went to different parts of the school site and spotted technology that contained a computer. They found interactive whiteboards, iPads, laptops and more. The children particularly enjoyed going into the offices and comparing laptops and desktop monitors.

In addition to their regular PE sessions, Year 2 have been taking part in weekly Diwali dancing sessions led by external visitors. They have loved participating in the sessions and learning new skills. Each week, the children learn new choreography which they practise with music.

In science, the children were given a challenge to investigate. They were introduced to a fictional child named Mark, who wasn't sleeping well. They discussed that Mark's sleep was being disrupted by gaming, scary films and junk food before bed. The children worked in pairs to identify steps Mark could take to improve his sleep, discussing why sleep is so necessary for the human body. The investigation concluded with the children designing their ideal night routine, which they can use themselves at home.

Update – Friday 18th September 2026

In geography, the children have been learning about keys and how they help locate places on a map. They played games to practise this skill, then tried locating places themselves.

The children had a special delivery this week, in English! Little Red Riding Hood left each class her true story, Little Red, and has set the children the challenge of rewriting it. To help, they have been learning the story off by heart using actions.  They have worked so hard to learn the whole story and enjoyed performing, recording and then watching themselves on the big screen!

In maths, this week's focus has been place value. The children have practised partitioning numbers into 10s and 1s using practical resources. They then challenged themselves to partition a range of numbers flexibly. They have also been practising counting forwards and backwards in 10s to 100; ask them to show you this at home!

This week in art, the children recapped their understanding of mixing hues, which they learnt last week. They then practised mixing hues by putting small strokes of paint around the outside of a picture. They had to look carefully and decide how much of each colour to mix, in order to make a lighter or darker hue.

Update – Friday 11th September 2026

In geography this week, Year 2 travelled around the world! They stopped off at each of the 7 continents, using their atlas skills to locate countries on each continent. They explored food from different countries, completed atlas challenges and learnt facts about cultures around the world. They then recapped their understanding of compass points from Year 1 and put their learning into practise by making their own! They worked in groups, tested each other's knowledge, and then applied it to UK map work.

In science, the children continued their learning about humans, this time focusing on human life cycles. They discussed the different stages of human life, from birth to old age. They worked hard to create their own human life cycles, making sure each stage and process was in the correct place.

This week in art, Year 2 continued their Colour Quest unit, focusing on colour mixing. This week, they focused on mixing different hues. The children chose 2 base primary colours and explored what happened when they added different amounts of each colour. They discovered they had created a whole range of hues, which looked fantastic!

Update – Friday 4th September 2026

We have had a great first week in Year 2! We have been getting used to our new classrooms, making friends and starting our new Year 2 learning.

In science, the children started their new unit 'Healthy Humans'. They recapped what humans are and completed a true-or-false quiz to support their understanding. Some of the facts they learnt are that humans are living things, they are omnivores, they have 5 senses and they are mammals.

In art, Year 2 began their 'Colour Quest' unit by creating their own colour wheels. The children mixed primary and secondary colours, and had to decide where to place these on the colour wheels. The finished results look amazing!

In maths, the children have begun learning about place value up to 100. They are recognising tens and ones, and using dienes to create a range of 2-digit numbers. They have been practising counting in 10s and are becoming increasingly confident.

Well done for making such an amazing start, Year 2!
