In Year 6, our teachers are Mrs Webb (Class 10), Mr Davison (Class 11) and Miss James (Class 12). We are also supported by our dedicated Learning Support Assistant (LSA): Miss Smith-Banton

Year 6 Autumn 1 Curriculum Newsletter

Update - Friday 11th September 2026

This week in History, Year Six have been developing their understanding of Africa and its diverse countries as they prepare to begin their new unit exploring the history of the transatlantic slave trade.

The children researched a range of African countries, discovering more about their geography, cultures, landmarks, languages, and traditions. They then used their research to create detailed and informative country fact files, presenting their findings in some beautifully designed pieces of work.

This learning has given Year Six important geographical and cultural context before they explore the history of the Maafa in greater depth. We were particularly impressed by the care, creativity, and pride the children showed in presenting their finished fact files. A fantastic start to an important new topic!

This week in Geography, Year Six have been building on their knowledge of longitude and the Prime Meridian by exploring how time zones work across the world.

The children discovered why different countries experience different times of day and investigated how time changes as we travel east or west from the Prime Meridian. They then put their understanding to the test by plotting different locations around the world and calculating what the time would be in each place.

There was plenty of fantastic geographical thinking as the children worked out whether they needed to move forwards or backwards in time. Year Six showed excellent problem-solving skills and are developing a brilliant understanding of how our world is connected.

Update – Friday 4th September 2026

What a brilliant first few days we have had in Year 6! The children have settled into their new routines incredibly well and have already shown a fantastic attitude towards their learning. It has been wonderful to see everyone getting to know their new classroom, working together and embracing the exciting challenges that Year 6 will bring.

Geography 

We have wasted no time getting started with our new geography learning! This week, we have explored the features of the Earth, developed our understanding of the globe, and begun to investigate lines of latitude and longitude. The children have been learning how these imaginary lines help us locate places around the world accurately. 

English 

We have also launched our first English unit, which has already captured everyone’s attention! We are learning about the incredible true story of Juliane Koepcke, who survived a plane crash over the Amazon rainforest and then faced an extraordinary journey through the jungle. The children have begun exploring her remarkable story and considering how we can use powerful vocabulary and descriptive language to bring the Amazon rainforest and her experience to life in our own writing.
