School Council

School Council Leader - Carley Ferguson

What does a school council do?

A school council is a formal group of pupils representing their classmates in discussing school issues with the school council leader and the headteacher. Students are elected to represent the views of all pupils and improve our school. They help decide how the school is run and take on projects that support the children’s learning and development, such as organising charity events, representing the school at external events, or ensuring it is environmentally friendly. The other children are elected to our School Council. A school council does several things:

  • A school council usually meets with a teacher present to discuss and resolve problems. These could include school lunches, behaviour, or ideas for fundraising events.
  • School council members are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed upon, such as planning discos, writing newspaper articles, or meeting with catering staff.
  • Each year, every class typically elects one representative to be a school council member. The council then meets to elect officers, including the Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary.

How is our School Council elected?

Democratic elections are held annually for class representatives on the school council from Y1 to Y6. Class members vote for a representative who they believe has the qualities needed to be a class representative. From those elected, pupils put themselves forward for the much-sought-after positions of Secretary, Vice Chair and Chairperson.

Together, the school council represents and shares the thoughts, ideas, and concerns of their classes. They are proactive in developing school initiatives and driving them forward. They also play a vital role in the decision-making process for changes.

Our priorities for this year

As a School Council, we have decided that our priorities for the year should be:

  • Encourage more classmate bonding on the playground through friendship benches and play buddies.

  • Hold more fundraisers throughout the academic year for a variety of organisations.

  • To reduce the amount of waste the school produces

What did we achieve in 2024-25?

Our priorities for 2024-25

As a School Council, we have decided that our priorities for the year should be:

  • Encourage more classmate bonding on the playground through the use of friendship benches and play buddies.

  • Hold more fundraisers throughout the academic year for a variety of organisations.

  • To reduce the amount of waste the school produces

What have we achieved?

This year, the school council have been working hard to promote more positive actions on the playground and help boost the mental wellbeing of their peers.

To help with this, they were able to put in place friendship spots and friend buddies on the playground. Children who felt sad or lonely could go to these spots, and a buddy would come over and play with them. It has been a huge success across the federation!

The school council also wanted to do more for the environment, so they asked if we could get more bins on the playground. This was approved, and we were given two different coloured bins that were placed around the school grounds. A blue one for food waste and a black one for general waste. These have been very useful, and we have seen a huge change across the school.

In terms of boosting mental health, the school council also held a very successful 'Wear it Rainbow Day' to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation. They got everybody to come in dressed as colourful as possible and donate £1 in return. In classes, the children were given a small square and a colour, and they had to design that square using only that colour. This then enabled a big rainbow to be created and put on display. We raised £432.50.

What did we achieve in 2023-24?

Our priorities for 2023-24

As a School Council, we have decided that our priorities for the year should be:

  • To work on improving their morale by reimplementing school discos at the end of each term to celebrate the hard work they've been doing.
  • Introduce sports buddies so there are more playtime activities to lower lunchtime problems and loneliness.
  • To help improve portion sizes and the type of food that is served during lunchtime.

What have we achieved?

School Disco

Having asked Miss Charman if we could reintroduce discos at the end of each term to celebrate all the hard work everyone has put in and boost everyone's morale. On Wednesday, 22nd May 2024, we had our first disco, which everyone loved, which you can see in the photos! Hopefully, Miss Charman will let us have another one to celebrate everyone's hard work before the summer holidays.

Sports Buddies

This year, we have worked on introducing Sports Buddies so there are more activities at lunchtime for everyone to join. We have discussed this with Coach Jordan, who has organised more activities to be on the playgrounds during lunchtime. This has meant there are fewer problems at lunchtime and fewer people feel lonely.
