School Council

2023-24

School Council Leader - Carley Ferguson

What does a school council do?

A school council is a formal group of pupils representing their classmates in discussing school issues with our school council leader and headteacher. Students are elected to represent all pupils' views and improve our school. They help decide how the school is run and take on projects supporting the children’s learning and development, such as organising charity events, representing the school at outside events, or ensuring it is environmentally friendly. The other children elected our School Council. A school council does several things:

  • A school council usually meets with a teacher present to discuss and sort out problems. These could include school lunches, behaviour or ideas for fundraising events.

  • School council members are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed upon, such as planning discos, writing newspaper articles, or meeting with catering staff.

  • Each year, every class will normally elect one representative to be a school council member. The council will then meet to elect officers such as Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.

How is our School Council elected?

Democratic elections are held annually for class representatives on the school council from Y1 to Y6. Class members vote for a representative, who they believe to have the qualities needed, to be a class representative. From those elected, pupils put themselves forward for the much sought after positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Chair Person.

Together, the school council represent and share the thoughts, ideas and concerns of their classes and they are proactive in developing school initiatives and driving them forward. They also play a vital role in the decision making process of changes.

Our priorities for this year

This year, the children want to work on improving their morale by reimplementing school discos at the end of each term to celebrate the hard work they've been doing. Introduce sports buddies so there are more playtime activities to lower lunchtime problems and loneliness. They have also become lunch buddies with Miss Charman to help improve portion sizes and the type of food that is served during lunchtime.
